KABUL (Pajhwok): Russian forces have seized a Ukrainian nuclear power plant, the biggest in Europe, as a result of an overnight assault, a media report said on Saturday.
The attack on the nuclear power plant, which was briefly set aflame, triggered fears of a catastrophe, the Associated Press said.
UN and Ukrainian officials were quoted as saying that firefighters extinguished the fire and no radiation was released.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station supplies more than 20 percent of Ukraine’s electricity. Isolated to a training area, the blaze was put out before it spread to the nuclear reactors.
Having seized the facility, Russian forces are closing in on Mykolaiv in a bid to take control of the Black Sea coast.
In an ostensible attempt to sever the former Soviet republic’s access to the sea, the Russian military is said to have made major gains on the ground in southern Ukraine.
