PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The second consignment of 2,000 tonnes of wheat from India is on its way to Afghanistan, a media report said on Sunday.

Following clearance by Pakistani authorities at the Wagah border in Lahore, a 36-truck fleet left for the war-torn country on Saturday evening.

Dawn quoted an unnamed official as saying Afghanistan found it hard to lift the entire wheat stock of 50,000 tonnes from India within the stipulated timeframe of a month.

So far, the newspaper said, Afghanistan had transported only 4,500 tonnes of the India-donated wheat from February 22 to March 5.

“Around 45,500 tonnes of wheat remain to be lifted and it seems difficult for the Afghan authorities to do so within one month,” the official added.

He believed the entire exercise would take 48 days more [with effect from March 5] if it continued at the current clip.

Earlier, the Afghan trucks entered Pakistan via Torkham on Thursday night and reached Wagah on Friday morning under tight security.
