Putin to face defeat in Ukraine: Ex-Soviet Union solider

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Former Soviet Union soldier, who stayed in Afghanistan after Soviet withdrawal, says Russian President Vladimir Putin will face defeat in Ukraine conflict.

Hakimove— now Shaikh Abdullah — was part of Soviet Union forces who invaded Afghanistan back in 1979. He did not return to then Soviet Union and preferred to stay in Afghanistan.

Shaikh Abdullah condemned Putin’s military action in Ukraine and termed it a mistake. He stressed Putin will face defeat in this war as he had forced the people of Ukraine to displace and suffer the consequences of war.

“Ukraine issue should have been resolved through talks and there is no need to attack a country. Currently millions of people are displaced and facing terrible condition, it is Putin’s mistake and he will face defeat one day,” he believed.

“Every country that invades another country is making mistake,” he said.

Abdullah was injured during battle in 1979 and he was rescued by Mujahideen.

He has bad memories from conflict in Afghanistan and said he got injured multiple times but he never contacted his family or Russian military.

He currently safeguards some remains of Soviet Union military invasion in a museum in the Bagh-i-Mellat Park.

Weapons from different countries — US, China, Italy, UK and Iran — are put on display in this museum.

He has a lot of memories from past conflicts but he complained against weakness of his memory as he did not remember many things.
