Paxlovid effective against Covid-19 in initial stages: Experts

KABUL (Pajhwok): Health experts have acknowledged social and main stream media’s claims that antiviral drug Paxlovid tablets are effective against Covid-19.

According to social media posts, Paxlovid tablets work 89 percent against Covid-19 and could decrease the intensity of the virus.

What is Paxlovid?

After Covid-19 outbreak, new medicines for treatment of the virus were introduced in the market, one of these medicines is Paxlovid newly introduced in the market.

This medicine is produced by an American company and is 89 percent effective against Covid-19 virus.

Social media activists talk about Paxlovid

A facebook page TandorostiKoodakan wrote: “US Company Pfizer has started the experiment of Paxlovid on children up to 17 year old. Paxlovid has been acknowledged in many countries and showed 89 percent effectiveness among individuals with Covid-19 mild symptoms and the threat of hospitalization.”

Afghanistan International on its twitter handle wrote that the World Health Organisation and US relevant institutions have issued license for the use of Paxlovid.

Experts

However, experts say this medicine is not effective for patients who are hospitalized.

Afghan-Japan IPC In-Charge Dr. Mairanai Barat said Paxlovid is the combination of Nirmatelevir and Retinovir and effective against patients with mild symptoms.

“But we cannot recommend the medicine for patients in serious condition because this will not benefit them,” he said.

IRNA News Agency wrote: “Studies show that Paxlovid with Retinovir are 89 percent effective against Covid-19 and could decrease the threat of death from Covid-19.”

Dr. HashmatFaizi, emergency section head at Afghan-Japan Hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Paxlovid is the combination of Nirmatelevir and Retinovir.

He said the tables were taken two times a day for five days and were effective for patients suffering from mild Covid-19 symptoms.
