PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): In a moment of high drama, President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly 9n Sunday, soon after a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan was declared unconstitutional.
Outraged by the deputy speaker’s decision, united opposition members refused to leave the National Assembly building.
Former NA speaker Ayaz Sadiq took the speaker’s seat and chaired the proceedings — with no member of the government in attendance.
Opposition members clearly outnumbered government lawmakers and their allies in the lower house, leaving the deputy speaker with no option but to dismiss the no-trust vote against the premier.
Imran Khan, meanwhile, announced that he had advised the president to dissolve the National Assembly, paving the way for fresh elections.
In a brief televised address to the nation the nation to get ready for mew elections. Khan sent a summary, advising the president to dissolve assemblies.
The nation would not allow corrupt elements to decide their fate, Khan said, claiming that a sinister conspiracy against his government had foiled.
“The speaker has rejected the move and I felicitate the whole nation,” he said, adding he knew the nation was concerned about the plot.
Meanwhile, the opposition leader in the National Assembly slammed Sunday’s developments as “nothing short of high treason”.
The resolution, addressed to the secretary of the National Assembly Secretariat, was submitted by Murtaza Javed Abbasi of the PML-N. The resolution carried the signatures of more than a hundred lawmakers.
