Overpricing: 30 butcher shops shut in Jalalabad

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least 30 butcher shops have been shut down by the municipality for overpricing in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Bakhti Jan Murad, spokesman for Jalalabad Municipality, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had launched a drive to control prices in response to public complaints.

He said most of complaints had been registered against butchers and municipality officials checked and controlled prices in different areas.

He added the municipality had closed shops of 30 butchers for fleecing the people. The price-control campaign is ongoing.

Meanwhile, residents of Jalalabad expressed happiness over the action of the municipality.

Resident Himatullah said prices of food items had shot up with the advent of the holy month of Ramadan.

He recalled a kilogram of meat accounted for 350 afghanis before Ramazan began. But the rate surged to 400 afghanis on the first day of Ramadan.

Residents urged the municipality to continue the process of controlling prices of food items. They called for action against shopkeepers violating the price list issued by the municipality.
