JuD chief Hafiz Saeed sentenced to 33 years in jail

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A key Pakistani militant leader, who has been active in Indian-administered Kashmir for decades, has been sentenced to 33 years in jail.

Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, leader of the Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) group, was handed down by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore on Friday.

Saeed was awarded the punishment in two terror-financing cases registered by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

The two first information reports (FIRs) were registered against the alleged terror chief in 2019 under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 1997.

Hafiz Saeed was awarded 33 years imprisonment under different sections ATA. Additionally, the court imposed on him a fine of Rs340,000 ($1,825).

All the sentences would run concurrently, ruled Judge Ejaz Buttar, who said the prosecution had proved the terror financing charges against the JuD chief.
