KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan Ulema Association on Monday asked the caretaker government to reopen schools for all girls and create an environment for their education in accordance with Islamic law.

After the Afghan caretaker government decided to cancel the opening of girls’ high schools, the move drew both domestic and international reactions.

Afghanistan Ulema Association in a statement on Monday said, “Both men and women have the right to education based on Islamic teachings, women’s education can help a society to progress… We want the Islamic Emirate to open girls’ education and remove all obstacles in this regard.”

The statement said the government should provide education to girls in a healthy environment, enable them to complete their education with full confidence and observing of Sharia principles.

“There is need for some changes in both the curriculum and the education process regarding women’s efficiency and work in the society, it is the responsibility of the Islamic Emirate to develop a special curriculum for women so they become more helpful for the society,” the source said.

After the government suspended girls’ schools above the sixth grade until further notice, the World Bank has also suspended funding of four projects worth $600 million in Afghanistan.
