PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) activists rallied across the country against the ouster of party chairman Imran Khan as prime minister.
After nearly 13 hours of tense National Assembly proceedings, the combined opposition voted Khan out of office through a successful no-confidence vote.
Irked by the development, PTI workers staged protests in major cities, including Peshawar, Charsadda, Malakand, Bajaur, Dir, Multan, Khanewal, Jhang, Quetta, Okara, Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Abbottabad.
In a tweet, the ex-prime minister said Sunday marked the beginning of a "freedom struggle" against a "foreign conspiracy of regime change".
In Islamabad, PTI supporters waved flags and raised slogans in support of the former prime minister. The flow of traffic was affected on a busy highway by the rally.
Awami Muslim League chief and then interior minister Sheikh Rashid addressed a rally at Lal Haveli in Rawalpindi.
He slammed the PML-N, taking aim in particular at prime ministerial nominee Shehbaz Sharif. Sharif was trying to escape indictment in a money laundering reference, he claimed.
In Peshawar, protesters including women and children gathered at the Press Club in a show of solidarity with the ousted premier.
A big rally was staged in the port city of Karachi, where a huge number of Khan’s supporters, including women and children, were in attendance.
Earlier in the day, PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry urged people to stage protests after Isha prayers. He thanked PTI supporters for turning out in Rawalpindi.
Similar demonstrations were held in Lahore, Quetta and other cities. A large number of PTI supporters also held a protest in London.
