Afghanistan’s population reaches 34.3m in 1401 solar year

KABUL (Pajhwok): National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) officials say their estimation shows Afghanistan’s population reached 34.3 million people in current solar year, 1401, which shows a 2.14 percent increase compared to the last year.

A statement from NSIA received by Pajhwok Afghan News estimated the country's population in 1401 solar year at 34.3 million.

The source said that 17.5 million (51 percent) of the population were male and 16.8 million (49 percent) were female.

The statement added that 24.2 million or 70.6 percent of the population belong to rural areas and 8.6 million or 25 percent are living in urban areas while 1.5 million or 4.4 percent are nomads.

Of the country’s population, 45.5 percent of Afghans are below 15 years of age, 49.7 percent are of working age and 2.7 percent are over 64 years old, the source added.

Based on the estimate, the country's population growth rate, compared to the previous year, was 2.14 percent and in different regions the population growth rate is different as it is 3.75 percent in capital Kabul city and 1.78 percent or lowest in rural areas, NSIA said.

Population density of the country in 1401 at the national level was 52.5 people per square kilometer and this figure varies in different regions, the source said.

NSIA says that Kabul has the highest population density in the country with 1231.8 people per kilometer and Nimroz has the lowest population density in the country or 4.5 people per kilometer.
