PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Islamabad has given New Delhi a two-month extension to complete the transportation of wheat and life-saving medicine to Afghanistan via Pakistan.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said on Sunday announced the extension in the time period for the shipment of wheat aid and life-saving medicine that New Delhi was transporting to Afghanistan via the Wagah border.

In November 2021, Islamabad approved, as a special gesture to the Afghan people, the transportation of 50,000 MTs of Indian wheat and medicine to Afghanistan via Wagah border.

In a statement, the spokesman explained the gesture was given on an exceptional basis for humanitarian purposes.

He added: “The time period … expired on March 21, 2022. The government of India recently requested for an extension to complete the transportation process.”

Islamabad granted Delhi’s request to facilitate the transportation as a manifestation of its sincere efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

“All modalities shall remain the same as earlier communicated to the Indian side. The high commission of India in Islamabad has been informed of the decision,” concluded the spokesperson.
