KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of kidnappers have been killed and some others arrested during a 20-day operation to release Abdul Rauf, a minor boy from Maar-i-Sharif.
Two years ago, Rauf, 11, was kidnapped while he was on his way to school in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital city of northern Balkh province.
The child was rescued on Saturday and handed over to his family by Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Salam Hanafi.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the government spokesman, tweeted the operation to rescue Abdul Rauf lasted 20 days.
He wrote: “At last, on Saturday, a number of kidnappers were killed, some others arrested and Rauf rescued. The operation is still underway to detain the criminals and bring them to justice.”
Haji Mohammad Nabi, father of Rauf, hailed the efforts of security and intelligence agencies, saying the kidnappers demanded a lot of money in ransom for his release but he did not have that.
