TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Local officials in northeastern Takhar province say a hydroelectric dam with the capacity of producing 30 kilowatt of electricity has been inaugurated in Yangi Qala district of the province.
Mufti Mohammad Daud, Yangi Qala district chief, said that the dam was one of the most important needs of the people, and that its construction was completed in two months with the cooperation of the local administration and with the financial assistance of local people.
He said that a million afghanis was spent on the construction of the dam, which could produce 30 kilowatts of electricity.
Meanwhile, a number of locals were happy about the project and said that they faced many problems due to lack of electricity, but now their problem was resolved with the dam’s construction.
Sharifullah, a resident of the area, said: "We have been facing serious problems for years due to lack of electricity, so the locals decided to build a dam in coordination with the local government so they find access to electricity.”
Residents of districts living near Kokcha River were complaining about the lack of electricity.
Kokcha River is said to have great potential of producing electricity and some reports say the river can electrify one-third of the whole country if invested for electricity production.
