Afghanistan-Iran border crossing reopens

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Dogarun border crossing between Afghanistan and Iran has been reopened after a day of tensions, both sides say.

Afghan and Iranian border guards in Islam Qala had overcome the tensions, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on Sunday.

MoD spokesman Enayatullah Khawarazmi said on Sunday: “We aren’t unconcerned about our borders. The tensions on Saturday were triggered by a misunderstanding.”

With the situation returning to normal, the spokesman said the major border crossing — a key bilateral trade hub — had reopened.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) also confirmed the reopening of the Dogarun crossing.

Mehr News Agency quoted IRICA spokesman Seyyed Rouhollah Latifi as saying the border situation had come back to normal.

The Afghan side allowed later in the day the first cargo truck from Iran to enter the war-ravaged country, the official added.

On Saturday, when the Afghan forces tried to pave a road, a dispute erupted between the two sides and the Dogarun crossing was temporarily closed.
