KABUL (Pajhwok): A South Africa-born billionaire is all poised to purchase Twitter — a major social networking service — for $44bn, the BBC reported on Monday.
The Twitter board has agreed to the takeover offer from Elon Musk, 50, who is also a Canadian and American citizen, according to the British broadcaster.
Musk, who made the bid less than a fortnight back, was quoted as saying that Twitter had “tremendous potential” that he would unravel.
The world’s richest person, Musk reportedly owns assets worth $273.6 billion. He also leads the aerospace firm SpaceX.
In a statement, Musk said; “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”
He pledged; “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.”
The Twitter board unanimously agreed to sell the platform to Musk for $44bn on Monday, but the deal still needs approval from shareholders.
