KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has renewed its call for the establishment of a broad-based and truly representative government in Afghanistan.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, in a phone call with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, also stressed the need for improved security in Afghanistan.
The state-run news agency, IRNA, quoted the minister as reaffirming the need for an Afghan government that represented all ethnic groups and tribes.
About Afghan refugees living in Iran, Amirabdollahian urged the United Nations to discharge its responsibilities effectively towards the asylum-seekers.
With regard to the fresh wave of terrorist attacks and poverty-related problems in the neighbouring country, he once again called for the release of Afghanistan’s assets seized by the US and allies.
He went on to remind the global fraternity that the war in Ukraine must not dilute international focus on the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
For his part, Guterres also underlined the need for the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan and commended Iran’s role in hosting Afghan refugees.
With regard to the foreign minister’s request, the UN secretary-general hoped the UNHCR would be able to enhance its support to Iran.
