MAHMOOD RAQI (Pajhwok): A number of farmers in central Kapisa province claim their crops are in danger of being destroyed due to moth infestation and attack by other pests.
They say their wheat fields are plagued by plant pests and diseases and if left unchecked, people would suffer severely.
Ahmad Fawad, a farmer in Hesa-i-Duhom Kuhistan district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that more than three acres of his farm land was exposed to pests such as rubella and moths this year.
He added: “This year a kind of worm has been found and it has eaten all the leaves of crops such as wheat and fruit.”
Dozens of acres of other people’s farms have also been attacked by pests and moth infestations, he added.
Fardin, a resident of the Hisa-i-Awal Kuhistan district and the owner of more than four acres of land, is also worried about plant pests and moth infestations on his fields.
Maulvi Ruhollah Rouhani, director of agriculture, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the number of pests and plant diseases, such as redness, was higher than in the past, putting the crops at risk of extinction.
He added his department had launched a medicine campaign in hundreds of acres of land to prevent pests and plant diseases.
“We launched a two-pronged campaign to prevent diseases and pests in Kapisa province.”
