KABUL (Pajhwok): The US special envoy on Afghanistan has hit out at the Taliban government for the curbs it has imposed on girls and women.

After a meeting with Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Doha on Saturday, Thomas West called for global opposition to the restrictions slapped on Afghan girls and women.

“Girls must be back in school, women free to move & work w/o restrictions for progress to normalised relations,” West tweeted after his meeting with Muttaqi.

Afghanistan’s economic stabilisation and concerns at attacks on Afghan civilians also came up for discussion at the meeting, the US diplomat wrote.

He added: “Dialogue will continue in support of Afghan people and our national interests.”

The Taliban’s supreme leader recently asked women to cover up fully in public, including their faces. The order triggered international condemnation.

Five months back, the Ministry of Women Affairs stopped women travelling further than 72km without a close male relative.
