PARON (Pajhwok): The caretaker Minister of Education on Thursday said both religious and modern education was essential and they would pay equal attention to the development of schools and religious seminaries.

Sheikh Noorullah Munir made the remarks during a visit to eastern Nuristan province where he met with the governor and other officials.

“We want to Islamize education, but it doesn’t mean we will convert a school into a madrassa, the school is important in its place and the madrassa in its place, we want to create an education where out graduate doctors, engineers and everyone else is dressed in Islamic clothes. ”

He added both religious and modern education was essential and both would be paid equal attention.

He criticized the education system of the previous government, adding that there was no control over attendance in schools at that time, most of the students who graduated from 12th class could not pass the university exams and would study for one year to prepare for the entrance exam.

Munir urged teachers to regard students as their children and work for their better future.

He also criticized foreign aid agencies for not working for the betterment of Afghanistan’s education system.

“Every day a representative of a foreign organization comes to the ministry and we share the problems of the education sector with them but then they disappear. The foreigners do not want to build our education but want our children to be deprived of education,” he said.

He promised the people that he would extend education services to remote villages and areas where setting up of local classrooms was one of the steps in this regard.

According to him, three to ten local classes will be set up in each district, and an independent curriculum has been developed for these classes in which besides religion, students will be taught mathematics, Pashto, Dari and other subjects.

But he did not say anything about girls’ education.

Nuristan Governor Hafiz Mohammad Agha Hakim also spoke at the meeting, which focused on the situation in the province.

He said security in the province had been ensured and people were cooperating with the government.
