KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) says more than 4,700 health workers were infected with coronavirus while 97 others died since the outbreak of the virus in Afghanistan.

The coronavirus, which first broke out in Wuhan, China two years ago, has spread almost worldwide.

Statistics from international institutes show that hundreds of millions of people were infected with Covid-19 and more than 6.3 million have died since the pandemic outbreak two years ago.

According to MoPH, a total of 951,462 tests were performed since the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country, of which 179,279 were positive while 7,600 infected people lost their lives.

Thousands of health personnel were infected with coronavirus since its outbreak in Afghanistan.

Dr. JavedHajir, MoPH spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 4,932 health personnel, including doctors, nurses, midwives and other health workers in the country, got infected with coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

He said that the number of infections in health personnel was very high in the beginning of the pandemic due to lack of protective equipment.

Despite being at high risk, health personnel did not stop providing services and continued to serve patients, he said.

He added that highest number of medical personnel got infected with the virus in western Herat province, where the pandemic first appeared.

Since the start of coronavirus pandemic, 1,132 health workers were infected in Herat, 1,131 in Kabul, 482 in Nangarhar,  335 in Balkh, 169 in Kunar, 165 in Maidan Wardak and 155 in Takhar province, he said.

In Paktia 89, Parwan 85, Kandahar 84, Badghis 77, Baghlan 74, Bamyan 69, Nimroz 61, Samangan 60, Panjshir 56, Faryab 54, Farah 46, Paktika 45, Ghazni 40, Sari Pul 40, Kunduz 36, Logar 35, Nuristan 35, Kapisa 34, Khost 32, Zabul 25, Jawzjan 23, Badakhshan 22, Laghman 21, Daikundi 14 and in Ghor 12 health personnel have been infected by the virus, he added.

Hajir said that eight health personnel were also infected in Uruzgan and Helmand provinces each during the period.

Coronavirus claims the lives of dozens of health workers.

The MoPH spokesman said that 97 health workers had died since the outbreak of the coronavirus, most of them in Kabul.

The highest death toll was in 2020, he said, adding that 44 deaths have been recorded in Kabul, 15 in Herat, 12 in Balkh, seven in Nangarhar, four in Kunar, three in Takhar and two each in Nimroz and Jawzjan provinces.

He added that one death of health personnel was registered in Maidan Wardak, Kandahar, Panjshir, Ghazni, Kapisa, Laghman, Farah and Khost provinces each.

Hajir said that after the death toll increased among health personnel, the Ministry of Public Health took protective measures for doctors, especially protective clothing.

Gloves, PPE, headgear and slippers were among the protective clothing prepared for the medical personnel, he said.

He said that all personnel in the Covid-19 section used protective equipment and there was no shortage of the things.
