TALOQAN (Pajhwok): People’s interest in keeping ornamental birds has decreased in northern Takhar province due to economic problems, leading to a significant drop in the sale and prices of the birds, sellers say.

Khalid, a birds seller in Taloqan, says he has been keeping and selling a variety of ornamental birds for years to support his family.

According to him, the market for ornamental birds has declined by 80 per cent compared to previous years and people’s interest in buying and keeping them has also decreased.

“In the past, people would evince interest in ornamental and exotic birds in addition to domestic birds, But now people are not interested.”

Ahmad Waleed, another ornamental bird seller, said most people struggled with economic issues.

According to him, a pair of bird that used to sell for between 20,000 and 30,000 afghanis, its price has now reduced to 200 and 500 afghanis due to people’s weak economic situation.

Ahmed Waleed added that the sound of birds gave relief to human beings and those who were tired could change their mood by listening to the sound of birds.

At the same time, bird lovers in Takhar say that listening to birds and spending time with them keeps people happy.

Zabihullah, a birds lover in Takhar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that ornamental birds had good market in recent years, but the business declined to a great extent this year.

According to him, in recent years, besides Takhar, ornamental birds were also brought to the province from Badakhshan, Kunduz and Baghlan provinces, which had boosted the buying and selling market.

Meanwhile, Zubair Naeemi, director of environmental protection in Takhar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that bird hunting was banned in the province. But the government is trying to import pet birds from abroad to improve the market for ornamental birds in the country.
