MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The residents of northern Balkh province say the children ward at the regional hospital lacks beds and three patients share a single bed, insisting the problem should be resolved.

One of the residents, Ali, told Pajhwok Afghan News that three children used a single bed in the ward and as a result they came into contact with each other and transferred diseases.

“This is a big problem, three and four children share a single bed. The children are not comfortable and transfer diseases to each other,” he said.

A resident of Koshandi district, Fazl Manan, said he brought his ailing child to the provincial hospital a few days ago. He said the hospital’s children ward faced a huge shortfall of beds and several children were laid in one bed.

“Today I talked to the doctors about why there are a shortage of beds. This problem should be resolved.”

A number of others made similar comments and called for a solution to the problem.

On the other hand, the officials of the regional hospital also confirmed the problem.

The regional hospital head, Dr. Ghausuddin Anwari, told Pajhwok Afghan News there were 200 beds in the children ward, but hundreds of children were being admitted sometimes due to summer diseases.

“Under such circumstances, we are compelled to use one bed for several children,” he said.

Besides Balkh, all hospitals across Afghanistan, including Indira Gandhi children hospital, lack enough beds.
