GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): A number of farmers and gardeners in southern Ghazni province complained about the lack of cold storages and urged the government to address the problem.
Ghawsuddin, an orchard owner in the Khwaja Omari district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that their products surged significantly this year compared to previous years.
He said they feared losses due to lack of cold storage facilities and a proper market for their fruits.
He said lack of cold storages and other facilities had forced farmers and gardeners to sell their products (vegetables and fruits) at lower prices for fear of devastation.
Ghulam Rabbani, a farmer in Koshak area of Ghazni City, was delighted with his crops’ harvest and said lack of cold storage was a huge issue.
He said currently apricots, peaches, cherries, plums, watermelons, and other fruits were being ripped but there was no cold storage to store them.
Maulvi Abdul Manan Akram, director of agriculture, irrigation, and livestock department, told Pajhwok: “Concrete steps will be taken to sort out this issue in the future and there are strong commitments to address the problems of our farmers.”
