QALAT (Pajhwok): A local radio station in the Shah Joi district of southern Zabul province has returned to the air.

Mahmood Ibrahimi, director of Sur Ghar Radio, told Pajhwok Afghan News the station had resumed broadcasts at his own expense.

He said the radio station’s technical equipment and power system had been damaged as a result of war. He called on the caretaker government and media support group to help the radio station.

The radio, which went on the air in 2010, daily broadcast for 13 hours with the help of eight staff members.

Sharafat Wiyar, deputy director of information and culture, expressed pleasure the reactivation of the radio station.

In addition to the state-run radio, the official said, three private radio stations were currently operational in the province

Haji Tokhi, a resident of the district, said radio was a key tool of education and information for the people.
