Afghan-Tajik border security to be beefed up

KABUL (Pajhwok): Russian and Tajik presidents have agreed on boosting defence cooperation, including enhanced security on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rakhmon discussed issues of bilateral importance at their meeting n Dushanbe on Tuesday.

TASS news agency reported that discussions between the two sides focused on the situation on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.

Rakhmon and Putin exchanged views on closer defence cooperation and modernisation of Tajikistan’s armed forces.

The presidents also discussed current international and regional issues, noting positive tendencies in bilateral relations, the report said.

Putin is scheduled to fly today to Ashgabat to attend the Caspian summit involving leaders of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.
