KABUL (Pajhwok): Thousands of religious scholars and tribal elders gathered for a grand meeting in Kabul on Thursday to discuss Afghanistan’s myriad problems.

About 3,000 religious scholars, students and influential tribal leaders from across the country are expected to attend the three-day meeting.

On the eve of the event, government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters several committees had been set up for arrangements.

A declaration would be announced at the end of the meeting, which is expected to discuss like the reopening of girls’ schools above sixth grade, government inclusivity, the economic crisis and respect for human rights.

With the capital under a security blanket, all roads to the Loya Jirga venue have been closed and new checkpoints set up.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Maulvi Abdul Salaam Hanafi, the scholars may talk about the Islamic system, national unity and economic and social issues.

Hanafi said he respected women, arguing the participation of their children in the grand meeting somehow reflected women’s representation as well.
