30pc of Daikundi residents lack access to potable water

NEILI (Pajhwok): At least 30 percent of residents of central Daikundi province have no access to potable water, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund said on Wednesday.

UNICEF’s office in Daikundi conducted a one-year survey (in 2021), which showed about 30 percent of residents of the province had no access to clean drinking water.

Mohammad Jawad Afzali, UNICEF director in the province, said following the climate change, unpredictable rains and drought caused a water shortage in the province.

He added that based on the survey, 30 percent of residents of villages had no access to clean drinking water and the situation would could worsen with acute drought.

According to him, 90 percent of farmers in Daikundi were affected by drought and the situation may deteriorate.

UNICEF would execute about 21 water supply projects in the ongoing year, he informed.

Residents of the province have complained several times to Pajhwok Afghan News about the decline in ground and surface water levels, they urged the organisations concerned to address their problems.

Meanwhile, Water Management Director Mullah Rahimuddin Rahmani said he did not have exact figures because he started his job recently.

Rahmani acknowledged the lack of clean drinking water and aggravation of drought.  He said they had devised some plans, which could not be enforced so far due to paucity of funds.
