HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Following an increase in heat, seasonal diseases have also surged in western Herat province, says a local official.

Syed Arif Jalalzai, head of the Herat Zonal Hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News hundreds of diarrhea and suspected malaria patients had visited the hospital.

He said the patients feeling stable were discharged after being administered first medical aid. But critical patients are hospitalised.

Some physicians, speaking to Pajhwok, urged people to take more liquids and eat multi- vitamin food in order to fight seasonal infections.

Dr. Habibullah Mahmoodi, an internal disease specialist, said most people did not comply with hygiene and cleanliness. He believed washing hands was necessary to avoid contracting Covid-19.

He said 90 percent of seasonal diseases were caused by dirty hands. He advised children and elderly people to frequently wash their hands.

Medical experts advised people to refrain from eating fast food, spicy, roadside and unhygienic items to stay safe from seasonal infections.

Meanwhile, patients and their relatives, who visited the Zonal Hospital, complained of inadequate medical facilities.

They asked the government to provide all resources and facilities to doctors to enable them to take better care of ailing people.

Syed Ahmad, who brought his seven years old son to the hospital for treatment from Badghis, said: “We are poor people and could not provide treatment for our children at private hospitals.”

He Hhoped his child would be given all medical facilities at the zonal hospital. “The less fortunate people should be able to treat their children here.”

The Herat Zonal Hospital is one of the major medical facilities in the western zone, where patients come from Farah, Badghis, Ghor and Nimroz provinces for medical treatment.
