FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of western Farah province complain about the shortage of schoolteachers in remote areas.

The provincial education department estimates Farah needs 1,000 schoolteachers in far-flung localities. However, the process to appoint 460 teachers is ongoing.

The department says it has requested the Ministry of Education for the appointment of the remaining 540 teachers.

Atiqullah Arman, a resident of Bakwa district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that over the past two decades, education existed in bane only in their area. At the moment, he said, there was a shortage of teachers.

Arman added anyone who wanted to educate his/her children must move to Farah City, because there were no professional teachers in the district.

Akhtar Mohammad Zaeem, director of education, acknowledged the lack of teachers in the province.

He said they had 412 schools, including 81 for girls. About 2,584 teachers are there, but the province needs about 1,000 more, especially in remote areas.

Zaeem affirmed his department’s commitment to ensure the availability of teachers at every school.

He said the appointment process for 560 teachers had already been set in motion and a formal request for hiring more teachers sent to the Ministry of Education.
