KABUL (Pajhwok): Russian Special Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabalove has said the number of Daesh militants in Afghanistan reached 6,000, a claim rejected by the Islamic Emirate.
Kabalove said last year when the Taliban grabbed power the number of Daesh rebels in Afghanistan stood at around 2,000 but this number has now surged to 6,000 insurgents, a report in the VoA said.
Kabalove said Daesh was a threat to Afghanistan and the regional countries.
But Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson of the acting government, rejected the claim and said the number of Daesh insurgents had declined gradually. Around 1,000 had been arrested and the remaining were being suppressed.
He said: “The claim may be part of political rivalry between some countries but we assure them in this regard,” he said.
