QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): Residents of Qala-i-Naw, the capital of northwestern Badghis province, are complaining about the dilapidated condition of roads and streets and demanding their rehabilitation.

They say the former government paid less attention to the province, especially ignoring the city’s roads.

Abdul Sabor, a resident of Qala-i-Naw, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Qala-i-Naw was a small city, where roads were not standard and had never been repaired.

He said most of the roads were in terrible condition, causing dust and pollution in the air.

Mirwais, another resident, was concerned about the negligence of the government about the rehabilitation of the roads.

He said rough and bumpy roads caused traffic accidents and problems for the commuters. He added: “People who take patients to hospitals face difficulties”.

Civil society activist ArbabShikhulIslami confirmed Qala-i-Naw City roads were in deteriorated condition and criticized the government’s negligence in this regard.

He added as the roads were not standard, the city needed its master plan implementation and construction of standard quality roads.

He asked the officials to address the issue and solve the problems that the people have been facing since years.

Acting Qala-i-Naw Mayor MawlaviNazar Mohammad Wasiq acknowledged the deteriorated condition of the roads and said a plan for the rehabilitation of city roads was being chalked out. The rehabilitation project has been sent for announcement, adding that the wining company will soon start its work.

“This problem would be resolved soon, the bidding event took place last week and the winning company will soon start work,” he said.
