KABUL (Pajhwok): In the wake of killing of al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, the United States has issued a worldwide alert, asking its citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance.
In a notification, the United States said supporters of al-Qaeda or its affiliated terrorist organizations may seek to attack US facilities, personnel, or citizens.
Thus, citizens of the United States are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance and practice good situational awareness when traveling abroad, the notification read.
The notification said the Department of State remained concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and other violent actions against US citizens and interests overseas.
“The Department of State believes there is a higher potential for anti-American violence given the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri …these attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics including suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, and bombings.”
It urged US citizens abroad to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate.
On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden announced that the most wanted terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a drone strike in Kabul and added that “Justice has been delivered.”
The strike was conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and was carried out by an Air Force drone. An official claimed that al-Zawahiri was the only person killed in the strike and that none of his family members was injured.
