KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): A cholera-like disease has spread in earthquake hit district of southeastern Khost province and has so far killed at least eight people and infected hundreds of others.
The disease similar to cholera has spread in the Spera district.
Mohammad Nabi Zadran, in charge of the mobile health teams in the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that about 340 positive cases of cholera were registered in the past 10 days.
He said eight people including five children had so far died from the water-borne disease.
According to him, the disease besides the Spera district is also spreading in Giyan and Barmal districts of neighboring Pakitka province.
Dr. Fazal Karim Momandzai, director of public health department, told Pajhwok the cholera-like disease was on the rise in the Spera district but four mobile teams were available in the area to control it.
He added: “The disease has spread a lot in Spera district, its major factor is rains and floods as people consume contaminated water.”
Abdulllah Noor, a resident of the Spera district, told Pajhwok that local residents suffered human and financial losses due to the earthquake and the cholera-like disease was another disaster.
He urged the government and donor agencies to help eliminate the disease.
