PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): At least 20 people have been killed and 30 others wounded as flash floods triggered by heavy rains wreaked havoc in central Logar province, officials said on Sunday.

The floods emerged in Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital, Khoshi and Mohammad Agha districts, causing heavy financial and human losses.

Omar Mansour, the spokesman for the provincial governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News that most casualties and financial losses took place in Khoshi district, where 20 people were killed including women and children and another 30 injured and four others were missing.

He said about 3000 houses had been damaged and 2000 household animals perished in the floods. He said hundreds of families were moved to safe places from the flood-hit areas last night.  He said it was planned the affected families would be settled in a camp near the Khoshi district center.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Natural Disaster Management Maulvi Sharafuddin Muslim said in a video message that heavy rains unleashed floods in Logar, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Nangarhar and Laghman provinces. He said there were more financial losses than human losses.

He said hundreds of families in Khoshi district were saved from the danger of flood last night and it was planned to settle them in a camp.

The official said the floods severely affected the Khoshi district and forced hundreds of families to leave their homes. He said hundreds of families were rescued last night and today and they would be placed in a camp. Shelter and food items have been provided to the affected families.

Mansour also said 15 people were injured in Laghman province and two were injured in Maidan Wardak province due to floods.

A tribal from Khoshi district Shah Rahman Siddiqui told Pajhwok the worst hit village in the district was “Ibtak”. The elder said 12 people were killed due to floods and six others were missing.

He said  the floods completely destroyed the entire valley, washing away a number of women, children and men and destroying hundreds of houses . He asked the government and aid giving agencies to rescue the flood-affected families and provide them with emergency aid.

Siddiqullah, a resident of Hisarak village in Pul-i-Alam, told Pajhwok hundreds of houses were destroyed in their village by recent floods and many families left their areas and moved to other areas.

Sardar Mohammad, a resident of Dehno area of ​​Mohammad Agha District, told Pajhwok the bodies of two women were found in Dadu area and tens of houses and thousands of acres of agricultural land were destroyed.

He said the water in Logar river was increasing with each passing hour and hundreds of families faced the danger of flood and the government should transfer these families to safe areas.

“Floods caused severe damage in Mohammad Agha district, houses, roads and agricultural lands have been destroyed. Hour by hour, the water level in the river in Logar is increasing and people are in danger.”

Earlier floods killed 15 people and destroyed 60,000 acres of agricultural land in Pul-i-Alam, Mohammad Agha, Baraki Barak, Charkh and Kharwar districts of Logar.
