New girls’ school building costing $530,000 opens in Jalalabad

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has constructed a school building at a cost of 530,000 US dollars in eastern Nangarhar province.

Farhad Ahmed Stanikzai, spokesperson of Nangarhar education department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the new structure for Angeza Shinwari Girls' High School in Jalalabad city was built with financial support of UNHCR.

He said the building consumed 530,000 dollars and it was built in a modern style. The school building has 28 classrooms, two administrative rooms and eight toilets.

He said the building was equipped with solar and normal electricity systems, which would facilitate the education process.

The building was opened today and the opening ceremony was attended by local officials and UNHCR representatives.

Stanikzai quoted the education director as urging UNHCR officials to implement similar projects in Jalalabad city and some districts.

Almost half of the schools in Nangarhar province are without buildings and their students attend lessons under the open sky.
