US drones still fly over Kabul, al-Zawahir’s body untraced: Mujahid

KABUL (Pajhwok): The caretaker government on Thursday said the US ‘invasion’ of Afghanistan continued and American drones still flied over Kabul, adding that Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri ‘s body remained untraced.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the acting government spokesman, told a press conference in Kabul that the body of al-Zawahiri “is yet to be found.”

On July 31, US president Joe Biden announced the Al-Qaeda leader was killed in a drone strike in Sherpur area of Kabul.

Mujahid told reporters that the US drone strike was still being investigated and called the drone attack ‘a clear violation of Afghanistan’s airspace’.

He said the issue had been discussed with American officials and they were asked to resolve any issue through direct talks.

After withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan, the US said the war-torn country’s territory would be monitored from the air and no one would be allowed to attack the US and its allies from Afghanistan.

Mujahid said Afghanistan considered the drone strike ‘a violation of the Doha Agreement.’

The Taliban have confirmed the US drone strike in Kabul, but they did not confirm al-Zawahiri’s death. Mujahid said the US was yet to prove it killed al-Zawahiri in the attack.

“Investigations are still ongoing, the dead body of Al-Zawahiri has not been found yet. “

About Daesh, Mujahid said the group had been done away with in Afghanistan and asked regional countries including Russia not to worry about it.
