KABUL (Pajhwok): A Chinese mining firm has provided food assistance to 150 flood-affected families in central Logar province, urging the government to step up support for the Mes Aynak project.

Recent floods claimed 20 lives in Mohammad Agha and Khushi districts and wounded 40 others. About 3,000 houses were destroyed or partially damaged.

The Chinese company, MJAM, provided the affected families with food aid worth $20,000.

Food packages containing wheat, rice, cooking oil, tea, sugar and salt, were distributed to deserving families in the presence of Mines and Petroleum Ministry officials and MJAM representatives.

Local officials welcomed MJAM’s assistance and urged other welfare organisations to help vulnerable families in other parts of the country.

Hafez Abu Bakar Amini, Mes Aynak project director, hailed assistance from the Chinese firm.

Wu Min, executive vice-president of MJAM, was happy about the company’s gesture and urged local officials to support the development of Mes Aynak project.

MJAM signed the Aynak Mining Contract with the Ministry of Mines & Petroleum in 2008 to develop the copper mine at the Aynak site in Logar province. However, the project’s implementation has been slow and the extraction of copper is yet to begin. The mine, the second largest mine in the world, is estimated to have about 12 million tonnes of copper, the second biggest copper.

Maulvi Shahabuddin Delawar, the minister of mines and petroleum, says the government is committed to the implementation of the project, a priority for Afghanistan.

On behalf of the people and government, Mohammad Agha district chief Mohammad Hashim Akhundzada expressed his gratitude to MJAM for the assistance at this difficult time.
