Makeshift shelter set up for flood victims in Ghazni’s Andar district

GHAZNI (Pajhwok): A makeshift shelter has been established in the Andar district of southern Ghazni province for people whose houses were destroyed in recent floods.

Recent floods wreaked havoc in Andar district, causing casualties and destroying nearly 2200 houses.  Families whose houses were washed away in the floods are facing a lack of shelter.

Selab Charitable Foundation has established a makeshift tent area for the homeless families in Chahar Dewal area of Andar district.

The governor of Ghazni, who inaugurated the shelter, told Pajhwok Afghan News that 200 tents had been installed at the shelter for families whose houses were destroyed by recent floods. He said each family was given one tent and plastic sheet to find refuge for some time.

He promised that the affected families would be assisted by the provincial refugee and repatriates and the natural disaster management departments as per the available resources.

He thanked the Selab Charitable Foundation for assisting the flood-affected families and urged other charity organizations and well off people to help the calamity-hit people.

Selab Charitable Foundation head Ahmed Selab said they had erected 200 tents to provide temporary shelter to the flood affected families and they were planning to provide more assistance to them.

He asked the government, the international community and charitable organizations to generously support the homeless families.

Flood victims settled in the tents said they were happy for being provided temporary shelter. A tribal leader, Allah Noor, told Pajhwok they were living in the tent for three days, but were facing many problems including lack of food and drinking water.

“The floods took away everything from us and left nothing, we were able to rescue our lives only and settled in this camp, we have no food, no one has helped us so far.”

He thanked the Selab Charity Foundation for providing shelter to the people, but came hard on the government for not assisting the affected families so far.

Andar district chief Sher Mohammad Zabih acknowledged the problems being faced by the flood-affected families. He said he had shared these problems with the provincial government and a response was still awaited.

He told Pajhwok that the flood-affected families were in great trouble as they lacked shelter and life was difficult in the tents.

Recent rains unleashed floods in different areas of Andar district, destroying 2,200 houses and crops on 43,000 acres of land.
