Economic hardship: Takhar school students switch to hard labour

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Some school students in northern Takhar province have started hard labour such as gold mining to help their families economically.

They said tough economic situation forced them to hard labour and supported their families by earning 100 afs to 150 afs daily.

Sher Ahmad, the student of 10th class, told Pajhwok Afghan News with each passing day the problems of his family exceeded and that forced him to work in the gold mine instead of going to school.

Sher Ahmad said he earned 100 afs to 150 afs daily, although work in the god mine was a difficult thing but the worsening economic condition of his family forced him to work instead of going to school.

Aziz is another ninth grade student busy of gold panning at the corner of Taloqan River, he seemed to be loving going to school rather than gold panning, but his family economic hardships had driven him to work in the gold mine.

Aziz hoped to become an engineer, but now he works for up to 150 afs a day to cover a part of his family needs. He asked the government for a suitable job, where he can work and attend his school lessons.

Some of Takhar university lecturers expressed their concerns about the deteriorated economic condition of some families.

Sayed Shujaudin Rasoli, a university lecturer told Pajhwok Afghan News, as a result of poverty most students started hard labour.

He said government should strive to resolve the economic problems of the masses so that children are not faced with dark future.

Mullah Saifullah Mubarez, the director of labor and social affairs department of Takhar province has accepted in his remarks to Pajhwok Afghan news that the number of child labor was rising but added that the government was working to attract institutions that would generate suitable and simple jobs for the youngsters.

Child labour nowadays is a common phenomenon in other provinces in additional to Kabul and Takhar.
