KABUL (Pajhwok): Russia has blamed the United States and its allies, including Britain, for the current situation in Afghanistan.

A Geneva-based Russian diplomat linked the present crisis in Afghanistan to the 20-year-long Western intervention, led by the US and the UK.

Ilya Barmin, speaking at the 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, slammed Western countries’ efforts to shift the responsibility to the Taliban and play down their own crimes as hypocritical and cynical.

TASS news agency quoted the envoy as saying: “The root cause of the current situation in Afghanistan is the 20-year-long intervention …”

He noted efforts by the Taliban government to ensure the rights of women and girls in matters of marriage and property inheritance.

However, the envoy explained Russia shared concerns about the continued closure of secondary schools for girls across the country.

Barmin linked the suspension of the education process for high school girls to problems, including financial constraints. He believed the issue could be addressed if the US unblocked Afghanistan’s assets.
