KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations says three of its Afghan staff members have been detained and questioned by the government security personnel, but Islamic Emirate officials reject the claim as baseless.

In a statement, the UN Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA) said: “Three Afghan women working for the UN were singled out and temporarily detained for questioning by armed security agents of the de facto authorities.”

While voicing its mounting concern over the incident, UNAMA urged the interim Afghan authorities to abide by their obligations to respect the privileges and immunities of the UN and all its staffers, including their freedom of movement throughout the country.

Meanwhile, government spokesman Bilal Karimi vehemently denied the detention and questioning of UN employees and said: “Amar Bil Maroof (promotion of virtue) officials sought information from a group of women in Kandahar. But when they came to know that they were UN officials, the officials refrained from seeking information.”
