Lift curbs on girls’ education, UN chief asks IEA

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations chief has urged the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to immediately reopen all schools for girls across the country.

Addressing the UN Transforming Global Education Summit, Secretary-General António Guterres asked the new Afghan rulers to lift restrictions on girls’ access to education.

“From this platform, I appeal to the authorities in Afghanistan: Lift all restrictions on girls’ access to secondary education immediately,” he said in a statement from the UN on Tuesday.

Schools must be open to all, without discrimination, the secretary-general stressed, asking the Taliban to remove curbs on girls’ secondary education.

Audrey Azoulay, leader of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), said Afghan girls must be able to go back to school. “It is their right.”
