Over half of Afghans face extreme hunger levels: Gutters

KABUL (Pajhwok): UN Secretary General Antonio Gutters has said that Afghanistan’s economy is in ruins while the human rights situation has been trampled on.

Addressing the UNGA gathering, Gutters said: “In Afghanistan, the economy is in ruins where over half of all Afghans face extreme levels of hunger while human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls, are being trampled on,”

Earlier, government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid had said: “Over 181 public and private universities open for girls and boys in Afghanistan, where education has been spread to the remaining 70pc area.”

He said thousands of Afghan women were working in education, higher education, health, ID card distribution, passport, police, airports, media, banks and other fields.

He deplored some women had not been recalled to their offices due to an unfair work environment, but their salaries were being paid.

Hundreds of less fortunate women begging on the streets had been rounded up and provided with small amounts monthly.

In his address, Gutters said the international community was not willing to tackle big contemporary challenges. These crises threatened the very future of humanity and the fate of the planate.

The secretary general referred to the war in Ukraine, multiplication of conflicts around the globe, the climate emergency, bio-diversity loss, the dire financial situation in developing countries and the fate of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Hundreds of heads of state and prime ministers from different countries are expected to address the UNGA, but no leader had been invited from Afghanistan.

According to unconfirmed reports, Afghanistan’s permanent envoy to the UN Naseer Ahmad Faeq will address the UNGA.
