PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan has once again called for continued global engagement with the Islamic Emirates Afghanistan (IEA), saying a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan is a priority for it.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made the remarks at a meeting with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West.

The US diplomat called on the foreign minister on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, the Foreign Office in Islamabad said in a brief statement.

Bilawal Zardari stressed that ‘a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan remained a priority for Pakistan.

The minister reaffirmed the significance of consistent international engagement with the interim Afghan government for lasting peace and stability in that country and beyond.

He highlighted Pakistan’s facilitative efforts for building regional consensus on the way forward in Afghanistan, including through the Extended Troika mechanism.

He referred to measures taken by Pakistan to support bilateral engagement with Afghanistan and facilitation of international humanitarian assistance.

Thomas West commended Pakistan’s efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan and facilitation of evacuations from that country after Taliban’s return to power last year.

The two sides agreed on the need for continued cooperation and engagement of the international community to alleviate the sufferings of the Afghan people and promote regional stability.
