Gang of swindlers deprives people of money

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Some individuals in northwestern Faryab province have deceived several people over the telephone into paying them huge amounts of money, an official said on Monday.

Cyber Crimes Branch Director Maulvi Hayatullah Muradi said: “Some fraudsters telephoned people and told them they have won prizes from a telecom firm. Thus people were duped into paying them huge amounts of money.”

He said the swindlers, who belonged to Parwan province, had been identified. They allegedly told people the prices of vehicles, gold and cash and asked to pay taxes, transport and other charges before they could get their prizes.

“They asked people to pay them taxes and make other payments through credit cards because they did not accept cash,” the official said.

Muradi revealed more than 10 people had complained in this regard. Each of the complainants was asked for the payment of 4,000 to 130,000 afs.

One of the cheaters, Aminullah, hails from the Zazai Maidan district of Khost province. He has been arrested by security personnel in Khost.

In a video clip, he acknowledged deceiving women and extorting money from them.

According Muradi, Aminullah introduced himself as the head of the USB Company and asked educated women in Faryab, Jawzjan and Herat to send him their photographs in order to make sure that they were physically fit.

Later, he edited the photographs and threatened the women with releasing the pictures if they did not pay him.

Muradi said some women did not disclose the issue while others complained to him. He shared the matter with security personnel in Khost and that led to Aminullah’s arrest.

Cash and documents threatening women were also recovered from Aminullah, the official concluded.
