157 arrested over various crimes in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Police have arrested 157 people accused of various crimes during the past one month in eastern Nangarhar province.

The arrested individuals faced charges of theft, murder, moral corruption, fraud and drug trafficking and selling.

Nangarhar police spokesman Haji Raees Zabuli told a press conference here that the personnel of Directorate of Criminal Crimes and Narcotics Control had arrested 157 people in connection with various crimes in the past one month.

He added that 127 people were arrested by the Criminal Crimes Department and 30 by the Department of Combating Narcotics and Terrorism.

He said 36 of the detainees faced charges of theft. Seven of the arrested individuals were charged with murder, six with fraud, one person with embezzlement, two with animal smuggling, eight with injury, one person with murder, and one person with bribery.

Two people faced adultery charges and three others sexual relationship. The detainees included seven women and as many children.

Six people have been arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Directorate in connection with the smuggling of arms and ammunition.

Zabuli said security forces also confiscated dozens of kilograms of drugs and arrested 24 people and also recovered two cars from them.

The arrested people regret their actions and say unemployment forced them to engage in illegal activities.

Sudais, who was arrested on theft charge, said he resorted to stealing owing to economic problems and lack of work.

Local residents said the detainees should be punished according to the law in order to discourage crimes.
