US promises Ukraine new $625m aid package

KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Joe Biden has promised a new 625 million package of American military aid to Ukraine.

The White House said Biden held out the promise during a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky on Tuesday.

A statement from the White House said Biden vowed to push ahead with supporting Ukraine for as long as it took, including the provision of a fresh $625 million security assistance package.

Additional weapons and equipment, including HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems, artillery systems and ammunition, and armoured vehicles are part of the assistance.

According to TASS news agency, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the recent aid delivery would bring the overall cost of US military aid to Ukraine to more than $17.5 billion.

He added: “The capabilities we are delivering are carefully calibrated to make the most difference on the battlefield and strengthen Ukraine’s hand at the negotiating table …”

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a special military operation in Ukraine in late February, an invasion that is still ongoing.
