Ghor livestock farmers demand fodder ahead of winter

FEROZKOH CITY (Pajhwok): Livestock farmers in western Ghor province are concerned about the shortage of fodder for their animals and urge the government to support them in this regard prior to winter season.

Government officials say they are trying to provide fodders to livestock farmers in coordination with aid giving NGOs in the province.

Abdul Hai, who owns 20 sheep, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “It is the second consecutive year of drought and as a result clover or other grass did not grow and I lack fodder for my herd, the government should assist us”.

Livestock farmers say they are not financially capable to buy animal’s food: “There is no work to earn money and buy animal food, the price of a bag of hay was 200 to 3000 afs last year, but it is sold for up to 800 afs this year, a poor man cannot buy it,” Abdul Hai said.

Abdul Hai was concerned his animals could die in winter because he lacked enough food for them. He urged the government and other relevant institutions to help him.

Officials of the agricultural department said they along with other institutions were trying to address the issue of animals’ food shortages.

Mohammad Hamas, a senior official of the information and culture, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “The agriculture and livestock department and some other organizations have distributed some animals’ food to vulnerable farmers and the process is still going on”.

The agriculture department in coordination with ‘Afghan Aid’ organization distributed 200 kilograms of animals’ food to each of 941 farmers in Dawlena district of Ghor province.
