QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): Over 7,000 tourists, including 10 foreigners, visited western Badghis province during the ongoing year, an official said on Saturday.

Abdul Awal Habibi, an official of the Information and Culture department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the tourists visited several tourist destinations and historical sites such as Nariman fort, Aaab Poda, Balamerghab and dozens of other historical places.

But Habibi said: “If enough budget is provided, we will restore historical and ancient places and the number of tourists will increase as well.”

He said they did not know the exact number of tourists visiting the province last year due to political changes in the country but this year the number of visitors significantly increased compared to last year.

Mohammad Karim, a resident of Qala-i-Naw, the provincial capital, said: “The increase in the number of tourists has led to a surge in income of local people and the government.”

He said the government must pay more attention to historical sites and monuments and preserve them.

HamidullahHaqjo, another resident, stressed the need for restoration of historical places as it could attract more visitors.
