KABUL (Pajhwok): US special representative for Afghanistan Thomas West and former president Hamid Karzai have discussed urgent need for a genuine national dialogue among Afghans regarding the future of their country.
In a series of tweets, West said: “Good conversation this morning with former president @KarzaiH, who continues rightly to call for girls to return immediately to secondary school. The Taliban’s denial of their fundamental right to an education is holding Afghanistan back.”
He said the international community would continue to roll up sleeves and address humanitarian and basic needs. “Need the Taliban to do their part, reduce aid interference, govern in ways that invite investment and return of educated professionals. Long way to go.”
Hamid Karzai also tweeted and said he discussed with the US special representative the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, the economic situation and intra-Afghan negotiations for strengthening lasting peace and stability.
He added both sides emphasized on the opening of middle and high schools for girls as soon as possible.
Karzai praised the US humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and hoped the country would continue to assist Afghans.
